AI Jargon Buster - Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing (NLP) is a field of study that focuses on enabling computers to understand, interpret, and generate human language. Let's use the sentence "AI Brew is an awesome newsletter" to illustrate how NLP works at a high level:

  • Tokenization: The first step is to split the sentence into individual words or tokens. For this sentence, we'd have "AI-Brew", "is", "an", "awesome", "newsletter", "published", "by", and "Naveen."

  • Part-of-Speech (POS) Tagging: Next, algorithm would identify the grammatical role of each word. For example, "AI-Brew" would be classified as a proper noun, "is" as a verb, "an" as a determiner, "awesome" as an adjective, "newsletter" as a noun, "published" as a verb, "by" as a preposition, and "Naveen" as a proper noun.

  • Named Entity Recognition (NER): In this sentence, we have an entity to identify - "Naveen." NER would identify "Naveen" as a person entity, as it is a proper noun referring to a person.

  • Sentiment Analysis: Lastly, sentiment analysis would determine the emotional tone of the sentence based on the use of the word "awesome." The sentiment analysis would classify this sentence as positive.
